Race Report

The British Grand Prix got under way to a dry track. Despite this Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel starting from 2nd place still lost ground to Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and the home favourite of Jenson Button in the McLaren.

Further back the Force India of Sergio Perez lost control of the car to be collected by Jean-Eric Vergne’s Toro Rosso.

More action followed immediately  into turns three, four and five as the low starting Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen slipped off the circuit, as he rejoined the track he lost control of the car slamming the Ferrari into the armco barriers. As the debris and chassis bounced back onto the track a flurry of further incidents were triggered. Felipe Massa’s Williams suffered the worst of the damage as he pulled the car right, desperately trying to dodge the carnage of Raikkonen’s car.

As a result of the incident the race was red flagged as the crash required cleaning up as well as replacement to the damaged armco barriers.

After almost a one hour break whilst the track team repaired the armco the race got back under way under the safety car. In the early stages of the race the remaining Williams of Bottas and Ferrari of Alonso immediately started to charge through the field making up for their poor qualifying.

Another car became airborne after Esteban Gutierrez missed his breaking spot to collide with the Lotus of Pastor Maldonado. As tyres touched Maldonado was launched into the air but able to continue.

Nico Rosberg’s luck finally ran out. As Lewis Hamilton split the Mercedes strategy on the harder tyre he was catching Rosberg at almost a second a lap. Before the lead race could hit a crescendo the gearbox of Mercedes gave up forcing Rosberg out of the race. Hamilton took the lead with ease and a comfortable 40 second lead.

A titanic fight in the points positions between Vettel and Alonso over fifth place. Vettel took over ten laps to work his way past the Ferrari champion fighting tooth and nail on every corner. Eventually Vettel forced his way though before flying on to hold fifth place.

With little competition in the final half of the race, Hamilton was able to control the tyres and engine through to the end. Coming home first at his home race the crowd erupted in support of Hamilton.
