The near perfect comeback, Sutil
After two years away from all motorsport Sutil returned in style for the Australian Grand Prix with Force India. With initial hopes for a clean and respectable race, Sutil was surprised to find himself leading the race when the front runners pitted.
With the expectation of Vettel, Alonso and Massa passing the Force India driver on the fresh rubber with superior machinery, Sutil’s pace kept Vettel behind for seven laps. This shows the genuine race pace of both Force India and Adrian Sutil behind the wheel.
“I was amazed that we could actually be competitive at the front. I gained my first position back after the first pit stop so the pace was really there. I could pull away from Vettel when he was running too close behind me, maybe he destroyed his tyres”
“The pace was just there and that was great to see.”
Sutil was then only passed again when pitting for tyres and once more. Sutil led a further four laps before making a strategic error and moving onto the rapidly degrading super-soft tyres.
As the tyres degraded after several laps Sutil was easy pickings for the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
He may have a lot to learn with the characteristics of the new Pirelli tyres but with 18 races remaining and Sutil already outshining team-mate Di Resta this comeback looks to have been a success, sealing Sutil’s future with the team for the rest of the season.
