Newest team in Formula One?
Formula One teams are often bought and sold. New deals see some rebranded while others simply sell off their assets to a new startup team.
The list below shows the year each team was founded. Contrary to popular belief the Lotus F1 Team isn’t actually related to the Team Lotus from the 1950’s. Their closest ancestor is actually the Renault F1 team who won the title in 2005/2006. But after a change of ownership and a rebrand the same facilities and much of the staff now exist as Lotus F1 Team and represent the newest team on the F1 grid.
The ‘real’ rookie teams on the grid are Marussia and Caterham who started life in 2010 as Virgin Racing and Team Lotus (they were related to the old Lotus team) respectively.
Starting a racing team is tough, F1 teams exist with the assets built up over decades. Experience and skill can’t always be bought to produce a fast car. The two rookie teams are finding out the hard way exactly what it takes to move up the grid.
